Gabby fell from a tree before she could even open her eyes. On a rainy afternoon she landed in Mía’s shoe as she stepped off the school bus. Mía picked her up and said one thing: we have to help her.
So we learned everything we could. A bottle every four hours, a warm nest built by hand, then a bigger house where her instincts kicked in. Soon she was running all over the place and playing with Tesla, our dog.
When she was big, strong and fast, we took her to the tree behind our house. She never really left. Every morning she chases the girls through the trees on their way to school, and every afternoon she stops by the yard for snacks. Call her name and she comes.
That is where nütz comes from: something small that wasn’t supposed to make it, and now runs free.
